Farmhouse table

In the house we are buying, there is a dinky little island in a pretty big kitchen. One of the first projects I want to do it rip it out and build a monstrous one our kids can eat at every day. I want to make it completely myself, including pouring an egg and dart concrete counter top. I wanted really chunky farmhouse style legs but when I priced them out I was deflated.

Have you ever priced out table legs?!? Someone is making a freaking killing. It was almost $1000.00 for 4 island legs that are 6" thick. Being the true DIYers that we are, my lover and I decided to turn them on our lathe. I wanted to practice on something before hand so we made a farmhouse table to sell.

Yep, you heard me. I put my blood, sweat, and many trips to the hardware store just to sell it. Oh well. It's the name of the game I suppose.

I plan on building something similar for my back patio later on but like 8' long. This beauty is 78" long by 30" tall by 37" wide. I currently have it listed for $650 if anyone local is interested. I'll update this when it's sold.

The table top is made out of 8" pine planks from Home Depot. I let my kids beat it with hammers, chains, screwdrivers, etc. It's our own little form anger therapy. The legs were made out of reclaimed beams I bought off craigslist. They were in his historic home in Tucson.

I think after making 4 of these legs, we are sufficiently practiced enough to bust some out for the island. Mission accomplished. And while not relevant, I had to post a picture of my fun printer drawer and accessories. I love hydrangeas. Too bad Arizona is the place all hydrangeas go to die.

How appropriate is the book title? I swear no animals were hurt in the making of this photo. By me.

Happy new year!

  2. Oh, I love the table!! Good work. You'd never guess it was your first time making those legs. I wish I was closer, I would buy it in an instant.

  3. Haha, I actually laughed out loud about the hydrangeas. And you're totally right. Although it might be more like "The Valley..." than all of Arizona.

  5. Love this table!! Could you please share your process for the wood planks? I know you mentioned beating them with hammers, chains etc. But what color stain is that? Did you do a couple coats? And did you apply a protective coat of some sort to seal it? Would love to do this to a couple tables we have and I love what you did here! :)
